Dear INMS Members,
I hope you had an a productive year and that 2012 will bring success to your work. Thank you for supporting the Indiana Microscopy Society with your membership. The Executive Committee is pleased with the level of regular, corporate and student participation in 2011 and expecially with the content and attendance at our 2011 spring and fall meetings.
Your membership is now due for renewal. You may use PayPal from the website membership page. If you use paypal, please send the completed form to me (see address below) so my records are up to date. Or you can mail a check made payable to INMS for $10 along with the membership renewal forml. I need this form to make sure my records are current. The purpose of these member profiles is to help the INMS membership learn the scientific and personal interests of various members to foster networking within our society.
Megan is the Student Representative for the Indiana Microscopy Society. Megan is from Paoli, IN and earned her BS in Biology with minors in Animal Behavior and Psychology from Indiana University and her PhD in Molecular Biology and Neuroscience from Princeton University. She is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at Indiana University. Megan credits her high school biology teacher, Mr. Tom Anderson, and an eight week NSF funded summer program for high school students called “Explorations of Careers in Science,” for sparking her desire for a career in science.
She uses two photon microscopy and confocal microscopy to explore population encoding and anatomical characteristics of the auditory system and cerebellar function. Check out Megan's most recent paper entitled Reliable coding emerges from coactivation of climbing fibers in microbands of cerebellar Purkinje neurons (J. Neurosci. 29, 10463-10473).
Megan has a Rhodesian Ridgeback named Rosie. Her advice for anyone seeking to improve knowledge and development is to "Observe experiments in progress to advance understanding of microscopy."
George grew up in Thorn, OH and earned degrees in Zoology and Chemistry. He continued his studies at Ohio State with degrees in Pathology and DVM. George obtained a PhD in Pathology at LSU and completed his Pathology residency at LSU. George's career at Lilly spanned 27 years where he established the Lilly internal human tissue bank to be used for discovery research and led the IHC molecular path lab where immunohistochemistry was used to validate targets for drug development and to develop biomarkers for clinical trial applications. He is currently employed by Indiana University School of Medicine in the Department of Pathology and in the IU Simon Cancer Center as a Pathologist. George is also responsible for the IU Simon Cancer Center Tissue Bank and now Co-Director of the IU School of Medicine Repository, the CTSI (Clinical Translational Science Institute) SSF (Specimen Storage Facility), and INBrain (IU Psychiatric Brain Bank). The modes of microscopy George uses in his research are Aperio Imaging whole slide scanner, Epifluorescense, Tissue MicroArrays Image analysis and ImmunoHistoChemistry Image analysis for human clinical trials and animal model biomarker development for human clinical trials.
When his is not at work George enjoys water sports, kayaking, gardening, and history.

Applied Precision to Expand TIRF Capabilities Through a New Patent License Agreement with Yale University
Applied Precision Inc., a GE Healthcare company, is proud to announce that they have licensed new patents from Yale University. These exclusive technology licenses will allow Applied Precision to integrate enhanced TIRF microscopy into its existing product suite. The technology is termed "Ring-TIRF microscopy" because it illuminates samples with TIRF as an adjustable ring of light. This represents a significant improvement over conventional TIRF as it removes interference fringes and allows fast multi-angle illumination to correct for chromatic differences and 3D illumination of the cell cortex, as well as a modality for fast photoactivation or FRAP.
"This is the first major advancement in TIRF microscopy to come about in several years," said Paul Goodwin, Director of Advanced Applications at Applied Precision.
